Discover Pista House

If you’re driving down 104 New South Rd, Hicksville, NY 11801, United States, and catch the aroma of slow-cooked spices drifting through the air, chances are you’re close to Pista House. I stopped by on a busy Friday evening after hearing several glowing reviews from friends who swore it served some of the most authentic Hyderabadi biryani on Long Island. They weren’t exaggerating.

From the moment I walked in, the atmosphere felt lively yet relaxed. Families shared large platters, couples leaned over sizzling dishes, and the staff moved quickly but never rushed anyone. The dining room is clean and well-lit, and the menu is extensive without feeling overwhelming. If you’ve ever struggled to choose between chicken tikka masala, goat curry, or a fragrant plate of dum biryani, this is your kind of place.

Let’s talk about the food, because that’s where this restaurant really shines. Their signature biryani is layered with long-grain basmati rice, tender marinated meat, caramelized onions, and a precise blend of spices. Hyderabadi biryani follows a traditional dum cooking process, where the pot is sealed and slow-cooked to trap steam and flavor. That technique isn’t just cultural-it’s culinary science. According to food research published by the Institute of Food Technologists, slow steaming preserves volatile aroma compounds, which explains why each bite here tastes so deeply infused.

I ordered the chicken dum biryani and a side of mirchi ka salan. The rice was fluffy, not greasy, and the chicken was cooked through without drying out-a balance that takes real skill. I’ve tested dozens of biryanis across New York, and what stood out here was consistency. Every spoonful carried the same spice profile, which tells me the kitchen follows a standardized preparation method rather than eyeballing ingredients. That kind of discipline usually reflects experienced chefs who understand proportion, timing, and heat control.

Beyond biryani, the menu includes grilled kebabs, butter chicken, haleem, naan, and Indo-Chinese favorites. During my second visit, I brought a colleague who works in food service management. He immediately commented on portion sizes and plating. For the price point, the servings are generous, making it ideal for sharing. The tandoori platter, in particular, offered smoky, well-charred pieces without being overly salty-a common issue in many casual Indian restaurants.

Cleanliness and food safety matter to me, especially when reviewing restaurants. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration emphasizes proper hot holding temperatures for rice and meat dishes to prevent bacterial growth. Here, dishes arrived steaming hot, and the dining area was well-maintained throughout the evening. While I don’t have access to their internal processes, what I observed aligns with good industry practice.

Customer reviews online frequently mention the friendly service and consistent quality. I spoke briefly with one of the staff members about peak hours, and he explained that weekends can get crowded, so reservations or early visits are smart. That transparency builds trust. It shows they understand their demand and manage expectations accordingly.

Location-wise, being in Hicksville makes it accessible for both Nassau County residents and visitors coming from Queens. Parking is generally manageable compared to busier city spots, which is a huge plus if you’re dining with family.

No place is perfect, of course. On one visit, the wait time stretched longer than expected due to a large party. However, the staff communicated clearly and offered updates, which made the delay easier to handle. Transparency goes a long way in hospitality.

Overall, whether you’re craving authentic Indian cuisine, exploring South Asian flavors for the first time, or simply hunting for a satisfying dinner spot with a diverse menu, this address in Hicksville delivers a dependable experience. Between traditional cooking methods, flavorful spices, generous portions, and steady service, it stands out as more than just another neighborhood restaurant-it feels like a place that understands its craft and respects its guests.

  • Visited for the first time and we really enjoyed the food. The ambience is 3 out of 5 but the food is 5/5. The haleem, bijli chicken and goat dum biryani were delicious and fresh. I loved bijli chicken. The sweet paan wasn’t that great either but overall very satisfied. Check out their prices as I felt it was little pricier but I guess that’s how it is everywhere due to inflation.

  • Absolutely wonderful little hidden gem in hicksville/bethpage area. DEFINITELY WORTH A VISIT FOR LUNCH. They Offer a 10 dollar lunch special!! The owner is incredibly friendly. Impeccable service. I got my food out in under 5 minutes. The biryani here is one of the best I've tasted since moving from queens. Flavourful. Just the right amount of spice. AND THE SAUCES (especially the green mint sauce) offer a cooling effect to every bite. All in all I would highly recommend stopping by.

  • This place is mind blowing! Great service and amazing food. We had ordered seekh kebabs as appetizers which were served with a mint chutney and a mayo dip. They were absolutely delicious! For the main course we had chicken zalzala with rice and chicken dum biryani. Both the dishes were fantastic. Chicken zalzala had a very rich and creamy flavor and I savored every bite of it. Biryani was served in a clay pot with a large portion size. We finished with Malai and falooda mulgi sticks. Must visit if y'all want good Indian food. This place won't disappoint you.

  • Had an amazing time talking to the owner and his wife who were very welcoming and focused on every detail of my food order. The food here is authentic and the goat haleem is to die for. I’ve been around NY and NJ plenty of times for biryani and I can say nothing beats these guys. They have an amazing selection of dishes and the ambiance is very nice to have a family dinner. I will definitely be driving back again to have that delicious biryani and fried fish :)
